CONNECT THE WORLD
Alternis
Alternis transcribes and translates conversations into up to 42 world languages — in real time and at the highest quality.
The challenge
We talk to colleagues and customers with a natural ease on a daily basis, often overlooking what a demanding task such a dialog already represents. Only when we fail to overcome a language barrier do we realize the complexity.
Alternis (Latin for alternating, in dialog) provides these capabilities and creates a new technological basis for processing spoken content and supporting people.
Skills
Language identification
A basic requirement for communication is that the language of the other person can be identified. Alternis only needs 4 words to be able to reliably recognize a language.
Speech recognition
Speech recognition extracts the spoken text from an audio signal. Alternis uses the latest AI technologies to reliably recognize the text despite background noise or accent.
Language translation
The recognized text is now used for speech translation. Here, the text generated by the speaker is translated into the language of the listener.
Voice output
A translated text can be displayed visually for reading. In addition, the text can also be made audible and output as an audio signal for a caller using speech synthesis (TTS).
Four words are enough to identify the language — Turkish. Speech recognition transcribes as the caller speaks, robust against noise and accents; translation carries the sentence into the listener's language, and speech output gives it a voice.
How Alternis works
How Alternis works in the control room, on a citizens' helpline and on a health insurer's service hotline — the way the person taking the call uses it.
On the left are all the calls currently open — each with its direction, start time, duration, number of messages and the languages detected. The selected call is processed actively and in real time; the others carry on in the background. Nothing gets lost.
Each side of the conversation has its own language field and its own speech recognition. After about three seconds of speech, Alternis detects the caller's language — Turkish, in this case — and translates what is said into the language of the control room.
Recurring questions are kept at hand as ready-made phrases, grouped by topic — in the control room, for instance, “Emergency location?” or “Callback number?”. One press is all it takes: the question goes out immediately in the caller's language, because every phrase is available in all 42 languages.
What the dispatcher says is transcribed and translated; it is read aloud when they press play. That way, dispatchers control their simultaneous interpreter themselves. They follow the caller's side as text in real time — faster than any speech output could deliver it.
In automatic mode, detection follows every change of language. Once it is certain that someone is speaking Ukrainian, a click on the lock fixes the language so that it does not flip to similar-sounding Russian. Any of the 42 languages can also be chosen by hand.
Alternis works across industries — wherever a conversation would otherwise end at a language barrier, for example on a health insurer's service hotline. The follow-up question goes out in Portuguese as a ready-made phrase, and the answer comes back translated.
Once the conversation has ended, Alternis produces a summary of how it went. It is labelled as AI-generated; as with any conversation, you should check critical details. Finished conversations remain available in the archive.
42 world languages
With these 42 languages, Alternis covers 187 countries and regions in which one of them is an official language — most of the world.
That puts more than 4.6 billion people within reach in their native language, and a further 2 billion in a second language.
The 42 languages, each in its own script, one after another — Alternis understands and translates them in real time.

Built into your telephony
Alternis connects to your existing telephony — via VoIP, SIP or a USB box — and runs in the browser, securely through a Chrome extension with freely assignable keyboard shortcuts. All open calls appear in one list: the selected call is translated in real time, while the others are transcribed in the background, so nothing is lost.
Calls with several participants are possible too, and at the end Alternis summarises the conversation. Alternis works on its own or together with Notitia, which analyses the content of what was said.
This is what a translated call looks like in Alternis. Every message from the caller appears in the original and in the control room's language, the follow-up question goes back translated — and the address the caller gives is highlighted.
Cloud or on-premise
Depending on what is being discussed, language can be very sensitive, and the data processing should be just as secure. That is why Alternis can be run either in the cloud or on-premise.
A cloud solution can offer many advantages. It frees you from running your own hardware and offers flexibility and scalability. Our cloud solutions do not rely on platforms from American corporations; they run in our partners' German data centres.
In between sits Sphere: your data stays entirely within your own system environment, and we provide only the computing power. Processing takes place exclusively in memory — nothing is stored on our side.
An on-premise installation in your own data centre, on your own servers, offers more control over the data. Please get in touch for more details.
Either in the cloud, in our partners' German data centres, or on-premise, in your own data centre on your own servers.

The art of understanding
Alternis in combination with Notitia can do even more and enables not only understanding between people, but also understanding between people and machines.
Data can be extracted directly from a conversation and transferred to a Notitia process context. This enables a new level of human-AI collaboration.
Alternis means “in turn, in dialogue”. The caller speaks Turkish, the control room German, and every turn arrives translated on the other side.
